Inaccurate models create a specific problem: a product that looks different in the animation than it does in the customer’s hands. Phase 2: Rough compositional sketches

I sketch the camera angles and movement paths before touching the model. These are rough, fast drawings that test whether a particular approach communicates the product clearly. I typically produce six to nine of these, covering different angles and motion ideas, so there is something concrete to react to rather than a blank brief.

This step saves significant time later. A storyboard conversation takes 20 minutes. Rebuilding a rendered sequence because the camera path was wrong takes days.

Phase 3: Grayscale prototyping

The model is built and lit in grayscale before any material or color is applied. This is the phase most clients never see, and it is the most important structural check in the entire process. Grayscale removes the distraction of color and forces the shape to carry the composition on its own. If the product reads clearly without color, it will read clearly with it. If it does not, the structure needs work.

This is where proportions, surface detail, edge quality, and camera position get resolved. Catching a proportion problem here costs an hour. Catching it after materials and lighting are finalized costs a day or more.

Phase 4: Materials, lighting, and motion

Once the structure is confirmed, materials are applied: glass, metal, matte plastic, soft-touch coating, foil labels. Motion is added last, and it is chosen deliberately. The camera path, the speed, the pauses, and any product-opening or mechanism sequences are all mapped to the buyer’s actual questions. What does this look like from the side? How big is it? How does the lid open? The animation answers those questions in sequence.

Phase 5: Revisions and final delivery

I deliver a preview render for review before the final export. Revisions are worked through until the result matches the brief. Final files are delivered in MP4 and MOV formats, in both landscape and vertical orientations, so the animation is ready for every platform without additional editing.

The most common mistake is commissioning an animation that looks impressive but does not answer the questions your buyer is actually asking. A beautiful rotating product shot that never addresses scale, function, or assembly does not move a purchase decision. It just looks good in a portfolio.

Before briefing any studio, list the three to five questions your customers ask most often before buying. Those questions are your storyboard. If the animation does not answer them, it is not doing its job regardless of how polished it looks.
